EPA Announces DEF Fix to Prevent Sudden Diesel Power Losses for Farmers and Truckers

At the Iowa State Fair, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new steps to protect
farmers, truckers, and heavy equipment operators from sudden diesel power losses caused by
DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) system problems.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the agency listened to complaints about
DEF-related shutdowns and is directing manufacturers to update software so trucks and tractors don’t suddenly lose power,
improving safety and productivity while maintaining emissions standards.

Why the EPA’s DEF Fix Matters

Diesel vehicles and machines can derate or shut down if the DEF system runs out or a sensor fails,
costing farmers and truck drivers time and money. Under the new guidance:

  • Engines will not suddenly derate or shut off when DEF problems happen.
  • Operators get more time to fix the issue safely.
  • Family farms could save an estimated $727 million per year.
  • Equipment stays productive without breaking emission standards.

Leaders Applaud the Move as Common-Sense Reform

SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler called it a “big win for small businesses,” and
Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said it cuts red tape.
Senator Joni Ernst added that tractors shouldn’t be halted mid-field by DEF rules.

The updates highlight coordination across agencies to reduce costs and improve reliability for
farmers, ranchers, and truckers.

DEF Software Updates Coming for Diesel Engines

Beginning with model year 2027, all new diesel trucks must be engineered to avoid
sudden and severe power loss due to DEF issues.

For vehicles and equipment already in service, the guidance enables manufacturers to install software updates
immediately—without extra approvals—speeding deployment of solutions.

  • Faster rollout of DEF fixes
  • Less downtime for fleets and farm equipment
  • Cleaner air without harming productivity

Balancing Clean Air with Reliable Diesel Power

The EPA’s goal is to protect air quality while ensuring diesel operators can rely on their engines.
By addressing the DEF shutdown issue, trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment can keep working—while still cutting
harmful emissions.
